π Odyssey gravships: being able to launch is not a reason to launch
1. First, confirm this is your playstyle
Odyssey is DLC content. Without it, ordinary caravans, transport pods, and quest travel still belong in Trade & Economy and Quest Decisions. A gravship moves the colony itself: structures, people, animals, prisoners, and stock can all leave together. The decision is not merely whether to visit a tile, but whether the colony can move its survival system.
| Ask first | If the answer is no | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Does this trip solve a real problem? | You only want to see a new place | Stabilize food, medical care, and defense at home first |
| Can cooking, treatment, and power still run after launch? | One pawn holds a critical role | Add coverage or reduce the trip; do not gamble the last doctor or cook |
| Have you read the destination risk? | You only saw the loot | Pause on the world map and read the quest, faction, and location text |
2. Before launch: four survival lines
| Line | Check now | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Flight and return | Current ship UI for connection, propulsion, fuel, range, and warnings | Budgeting only for arrival, with no margin for recovery or diversion |
| Food and medical care | Edible food, medicine, beds, and someone able to treat injuries | Leaving the working stock behind, then landing without cooking or treatment |
| Power and living area | Whether critical systems, sleep, storage, and work can operate first | Building a large workshop before refrigeration, rest, and care exist |
| Risk exit | Combat, weather, factions, and withdrawal conditions at the destination | Treating a reconnaissance trip as a fight you must finish |
Exact structures, fuel, range, and landing restrictions can change with patches, mods, settings, and the ship UI. Use the live highlight, warnings, and range information as final.
3. Choose a minimum running crew, not only fighters
| Role | Why it matters | What to do without it |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment / hauling | Landing combat, illness, and accidents immediately reduce action capacity | Lower the destination risk or add medicine and backup coverage first |
| Cooking / food source | A mobile colony cannot live only on one packed meal stack | Carry realistic shelf-life and return margin; do not treat a long stay as a day trip |
| Building / power | The first night needs safe basic facilities | Do not fill every slot with combat roles |
| Home team | If an old base remains, it can still face raids, injuries, and outages | Keep medical care, cooking, firefighting, and defendable rooms at home |
For prisoners use Prisoners & Recruitment; animals also need food, enclosure, and safe routes after landing.
4. The first hour after landing: survive before looting
- Read the ground: identify hostile targets, a safe rest area, weather, and a withdrawal direction; do not unload everyone blindly.
- Restore the survival line: make treatment, food, sleep, and essential power work before optional production.
- Choose the job: decide whether this is rescue, trade, exploration, or attack. If the goal stops being worthwhile, people and ship come first.
5. When to enter orbit: breathing, power, and retreat are the gate
Orbital sites are higher-risk Odyssey content. Official material lists sealed rooms, life support, stable power, airlocks, and vacuum protection as preparation; owning a ship is not the same as being ready for space.
| Condition | If it is missing | Correct action now |
|---|---|---|
| Sealing and life support | Pawns face vacuum danger | Return to ground play and stabilize the ship living area first |
| Stable power and repair margin | A failed critical system becomes an evacuation | Reduce variable load and carry repair / emergency stock |
| Controllable combat and retreat | Orbital facilities can have guards and narrow routes | Use Combat & Defense to assess it as a high-risk quest |
