π Odyssey water survival: water can feed the colony, then take away its retreat
1. First, confirm the DLC and this map's water conditions
Water, fishing, and seasonal flooding around lakes and rivers are Odyssey systems. Without the DLC, do not make this your standard map route; build the basic food line through Base Building and Farming first.
| Ask first | If the answer is no | Safer choice |
|---|---|---|
| Does waterside access offer a real food or route benefit? | It only looks scenic | Prioritize defense, expansion room, and dry ground for critical rooms |
| Do you still have dry rest and work space during a flood? | Storage, beds and kitchen all sit by water | Move the survival core back before adding waterside production |
| Are the current season and weather manageable? | Heavy rain and pooling are already frequent | Shorten outdoor projects and create a routing plan first |
2. Waterside settlement: separate floodable space from irreplaceable space
Water is not automatically a bad neighbor. The kitchen, hospital, main food store, bedrooms, core power, and the only route out should not all share one low patch of ground. Keep one complete survival line on high, dry ground; put fishing, optional hauling, waterside fields and decorative builds closer to the edge.
| Location | Good fit | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| High ground / inner base | Care, main food storage, sleep and backup power | Jobs that require water access |
| Water's edge / low ground | Fishing, interruptible hauling and secondary storage | The only kitchen, battery, or exit |
| Land-water boundary | Visible, bypassable defense and segmented barriers | A long corridor with no alternate route |
3. Fishing is a food buffer, not your entire food chain
Fishing can cover a temporary shortage or winter gap, but it still consumes labor, safe paths and a weather window. Ask whether the missing piece is ingredients, a cook, fuel, or a safe route before sending someone to water; fishing directly solves only the ingredient problem.
- Secure the next meal: check prepared food, usable ingredients and whether the cook can still work.
- Then open a fishing window: do not cross dangerous water, hostile routes or extreme weather, and do not pull your only doctor or cook away.
- Restore durable food: bring back farming, refrigeration and reserves. Fishing fills a gap; it does not replace the recovery flow in Food emergency.
4. Torrential rain and flooding: protect crops, routes and critical systems first
In Odyssey, torrential rain can overflow rivers, lakes and ponds. Shallow floodwater spreads, destroys crops and gives colonists wet feet. Pause, read where water is moving, then choose outdoor work; do not send everyone to harvest and lose the only medical route.
| Priority | Do now | Do not rush into |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Β· People and routes | Restrict dangerous areas and keep hospital, kitchen and exits reachable | Sending everyone through water for scattered items |
| 2 Β· Crops and food | Save mature, safely reachable crops; use indoor or stored food | Sending doctor and cook out for immature crops |
| 3 Β· Power and storage | Move critical stock back and check power and backup routes | Starting a big waterside project that blocks bypass space |
| 4 Β· Barriers | Use walls, sandbags or barricades to segment predictable water paths | Hard-building an entire shore without reading the terrain |
Water level, terrain, building effects and allowed placement should be decided by the live map, weather panel and build preview.
5. After the rain: do not send everyone outdoors at once
Confirm new dry routes, food stock and power before restoring farming, fishing and waterside hauling. Heavy rain also reduces vision and aiming; if a hostile event is active, open waterside ground may not be the place to counterattack. Use Defense check for the fight and Power emergency for outages, so one weather event does not remove three survival lines.
